The problem

According to the Safe System philosophy, deaths and serious injuries resulting from road crashes are not acceptable. Such harm to people cannot be seen as an inevitable price to be paid for mobility – as it often used to be the case. The European Commission has formulated the ambitious goal to halve the number of road fatalities by 2020 and a long term-goal to move close to zero fatalities by 2050.

Road safety KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are an integral part of the ‘Safe System’ approach to road safety. In order to gain a clearer understanding of the different issues that influence overall safety performance, the Commission has elaborated, in close cooperation with experts and authorities from Member States, a first list of Key Performance Indicators for road safety. In this way, Trendline is in charge of technical assistance action for the collection of Key Performance Indicators for road safety in EU Member States.

Our approach

The CTL is the representative of Italy in this project, which is why the following activities are incumbent on it:

  • Customisation of the common methodologies to the national situation;
  • Data collection for the KPIs;
  • Analysis of the data collected and delivery of the KPIs;
  • Dissemination and use of the KPIs within national road safety policies.
