African Continental Free Trade Area

Study of the demand for infrastructures and transport in the AfCFTA area

Client:
UNECA

Location: Africa

Year of completion: 2020

Areas: ,

The problem

The research project aims at exploring the effects of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) on the offer and demand of transport infrastructures and services.

The research questions dealt with are:

  • in what way will the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area influence the demand for transport infrastructures and services in the continent? What demand would there be for the different types of transport and what are the implications for investments in the development of infrastructures?
  • in what way will the state of the transport infrastructures and services in Africa influence the outcome of the African Continental Free Trade Area, measured in terms of volume of intra-African commerce?

Our approach

The research method proposed foresees:

  • demand forecast of different modes of transport as a result of the African Continental Free Trade Area;
  • estimates of investment requirements in infrastructures for the different modes of transport;
  • estimates of the impact of the improvements in transport infrastructures and services on the volume of intra-African commerce;
  • forecast of the demand for vehicles for different modes of transport – road (trucks), rail (rolling stock), air (planes) and maritime (ships) – as an outcome of the AfCFTA.
