The problem
According to the 2016 ISTAT data, in the Province of L’Aquila 691 accidents were recorded, along with 15 deaths and 1,111 injured, with a mortality rate equal respectively to 0.5 deaths per 10,000 inhabitants (in line with the national average). This had significant repercussions on the whole society, insofar as the overall social cost attributable to road accidents in 2016 amounted to € 77.1 million, while at pro-capita level roughly € 254 per inhabitant.
Our approach
The project consisted of a series of complex activities that ranged from the adoption of measures for the process of securing the maximum risk extra urban roads, to the realisation of new information systems for the collection and analysis of accident data and the professional training of technicians and decision-makers.
Moreover, the actions taken made possible the creation of a monitoring centre at provincial level collocated in the Traffic and Road Safety Office in the Provincial Administration offices. The criterion adopted consisted in the development of the Decision Support System Safety Manager, making it possible to improve the decision-making capacity on road safety of the Province of l’Aquila, at the same time representing an instrument of reference for all the other Public Administrations called upon to operate in the field of road safety design.
