Our research group is participating in IT-TARS – Technical Assistance in the Field of Road Safety – ITALY, a project funded by the European Commission under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Programme to support Italy in implementing European road safety policies and achieving the EU Vision Zero objectives for 2030 and 2050.
Developed in collaboration with ANSFISA (National Agency for the Safety of Railways, Road and Motorway Infrastructure) and the University of Naples Federico II, the project aims to strengthen national capacities in road safety management through technical assistance, harmonised data collection, infrastructure safety assessment, and institutional cooperation.
Among its main activities, IT-TARS will support the implementation of the revised European legislation on driving licences and cross-border enforcement of traffic offences, while improving information exchange through the RESPER network. The project will also contribute to the collection and harmonisation of Road Safety Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), building upon the experience gained through the EU Trendline project to provide reliable and comparable data for evidence-based policymaking across Europe.
Another key component concerns the implementation of the Network-Wide Road Safety Assessment (NWRSA) methodology on approximately 5,000 km of the Italian road network, supporting the systematic identification of infrastructure-related risks and contributing to the development of innovative methodologies for assessing road safety in urban environments.
Through IT-TARS, our team will contribute its expertise in transport engineering, road safety analysis, and data-driven methodologies to support safer road infrastructure, stronger institutional cooperation, and more effective implementation of European road safety policies, reinforcing its long-standing commitment to scientific research and innovation in support of safer and more sustainable transport systems.
